Healing for Christians

Updated: Feb 3

The past few weeks, I have been writing articles on the spiritual gifts of wisdom, knowledge and faith. These spiritual gifts are manifested through the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 12). This article is for the spiritual gift of healing (in case you couldn't tell this from the title).

A few years ago, I was told by a pastor that he saw that I was going to get this gift. When my dearest uncle was sick in 2018, I read the Holy Bible to him. A few days later, he passed away. This year, I visited my father who was also incredibly sick. By his bedside, I prayed and prayed for him. Just like my uncle, I read the Holy Bible to him as well. My father passed away about a month later.

When my uncle died, I had a deep sorrow, and felt guilty, because I thought I was suppose to heal him. The same feelings overcame me when my father passed away. What I did not understand at the time, is that healing is a spiritual gift. I was not meant to heal them physically, but I was meant to heal their souls spiritually.

The Holy Bible says, "I said 'Lord, be merciful to me; Heal my soul, for I have sinned against you.'"(Psalm 41:4 KJV). This got me thinking about the time when my coworker was sick. He was in his 90's and he had approached me to ask about God. He was Catholic and I didn't understand why he was speaking with me about my faith. Now, I understand: I was supposed to heal his soul, by praying for his acceptance of Jesus.

Healing doesn't stop at the soul. It also covers the broken-hearted. Check out what the Holy Bible says, "The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted..." Luke 4:18. Jesus read this from the Book of Isaiah when he was in a synagogue on the Sabbath in Nazareth.

Let's Get Physical

What about physical healing? Well, I've never done it, but Jesus did it. God heals people. Check out the Holy Bible. Moses prayed for his sister when she spoke against him and God gave her leprosy. Moses prayed for her to be healed, and God said she would be healed after a week, because God had (and still has) mercy and grace. God hears the prayers of His saints.

Now consider what Jesus did. Did he heal people that had physical illnesses? Yes. He healed people that had leprosy, palsy, and that were blind. The Holy Bible speaks to a time when friends of a man with palsy lowered him from the "tiling" of the roof to Jesus. They couldn't get the man to Him, because of the crowd. The Holy Bible says that Jesus said, 'Man thy sins are forgiven thee.' (Luke 5:17-20). Jesus also healed Peter's mother-in-law who was sick with a fever (Matthew 8:14-15). There are many other accounts in the New Testament of Jesus healing people.

We know that Jesus performed miracles. Did any one else do physical healing through spiritual means? God healed King Abimelech of Gerar, his wife, and his female servants after Abraham prayed for the King. (Genesis 20:17). The apostles Paul and John healed a lame man (Acts 3:1-11). In fact Paul had said to the man that he cannot give the man riches, but he could give the man the gift of Jesus Christ as his savior. So, if these men healed, why can't you?

In the name of Jesus, I ask that whoever reads this article gets blessed and receives the spiritual gift of healing. If they are sick God, please heal them! Father, please do the same onto me. Hallelujah! May they heal through the blessing of Jesus, through the promise that You made, and may You fill us with the fire of the Holy Spirit. Amen!
